Helen Foster-Grime recently met with Prof. Steve Webb MP, the Lib Dems Shadow Secretary of State for Climate Change and Energy, and Stockport Council Leader, Cllr. Dave Goddard, to discuss Stockport's achievements as a leading 'Green' borough.

Cllr. Goddard and Helen, who is a Liberal Democrat councillor in Stockport, were pleased to report that Stockport has maintained its position as one of the leading recycling Boroughs in the entire country, with over 35% of household waste recycled or composted during 2007/08.

Liberal Democrat run Stockport MBC has 11 Green Flag Parks and is aiming to increase this to 14 by 2009, following a massive improvement programme in parks. Two-thirds of the parks have active community involvement and the level of volunteering has been boosted by an extra £220,000 through the Community Pride campaign.

Helen said, "Our teams are working closely with local bus and rail operators to meet targets on reducing congestion, and these are supported by schools encouraging children to walk or cycle. I am delighted that my own children's primary school takes part in these programmes. Also, Stockport's current 'Kill the Chill' campaign gives energy efficiency advice and help for our residents at a time when people are desperate to cope with rising gas and electric prices."

Steve Webb agreed with Helen and Dave Goddard that Liberal Democrat councils are leading on these issues across the North-West.
